Coffee or tea? Which one do you prefer? For me, nothing can replace the warm soothing taste of a cup of joe. I’ve met a lot of people who like to experiment with the different types of tea, but have you wondered which drink has more caffeine?
Let’s tackle the age-old question. Does coffee have more caffeine than tea?
What Is Caffeine?
Caffeine is a substance derived from plants and seeds, most commonly found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and pop.
Caffeine is used to improve mental alertness, but it has many other uses.
It may improve mood, decrease the likelihood of depression, stimulate brain function, and protect against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Coffee or Tea
Statistically, tea leaves contain 3.5% caffeine, while coffee beans have 1.1–2.2%. However, the coffee brewing process uses hotter water, which extracts more of the caffeine from the beans. Brewing coffee requires a medium-coarse grind whereas tea uses leaves. The difference means more surface area meets water in coffee.
Perhaps this is where the debate or at least the confusion regarding which one has more caffeine comes from.
Coffee has a higher level of caffeine than tea. In fact, some people enjoy tea because of the lower concentration of caffeine. Black tea has less than half the amount that coffee has.
Final Thoughts
Nearly half the planet drinks caffeine regularly. Moderate caffeine has had impressive health benefits for many people.
Although each person is affected differently you need to keep in mind that excessive caffeine intake can be detrimental to your wellbeing.
To get the most out of your favorite drink without the unwanted side effects take some time to see how you feel when you have a cup. If you aren’t sleeping well, see when the best time to drink coffee is. On the other hand, if you want more energy increase the size of your cup bit by bit.
